Show notes

Some notes from the show's host, Dan, on everything prospective guests need to know before our first chat. If you would like join him for an episode, fill in the form at the bottom of the page.

A quick intro

GoodEnoughChats is trying to encourage men to take a more proactive stance in talking about their mental health. Our target audience is men aged between 35 and 55, in no small part because this is where we know there needs to be a shift in attitudes and behaviours.

The idea is simple. Neither you nor the host, Dan Bowsher, are mental health professionals, and this initiative is not designed to provide advice to others. It’s about sharing lived experiences of mental health to help others feel more comfortable to take positive action to improve their own situation.

It’s about having an open discussion, not claiming to be an authority, so others can help themselves before they get to the point of a crisis.

Have a quick watch of this video for a bit more context.

Pre-show prep

The first thing we need to do is meet each other. We'll have a 30-minute intro chat during which we can talk about the info below and pick up any further questions you may have.

Once we're both happy with all of this, we'll schedule a date for the recording. It's recommended that you block out a couple of hours for this, in part in case we overrun because the chat is going so smoothly, but also to give you a little time to decompress afterwards.

Format

We'll record using a platform called Riverside, the link to which will be included in the invite. It works best in Chrome (or the Riverside desktop app if you already have it), and all you need to do is click the link and enter the GoodEnoughChats studio.

The recording of the chat will be published on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and all other major podcasting platforms, and shared across social media channels, websites, etc.

I'll use short clips of the chat to promote the episode across social media - you will have access to them to share on your own channels - but the full conversation won't be edited. Episodes tend to be between 60 and 90 minutes long.

If you'd like to listen to some of the episodes we've already published, you will find a searchable library on  GoodEnoughChats.com.

Criteria for guests

First and foremost, I want to make sure you're comfortable sharing your story. The same five questions are going to be asked in each discussion, but we will explore other dimensions based on your answers too.

I won’t prep additional questions in advance, because I want to make sure we have a natural chat, not a scripted one. However, if there are things you would prefer us not to discuss, please let me know upfront.

Technical requirements

To get involved, you will need access to the Chrome browser or Riverside app, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet, well-lit room.

The structure

After a brief introduction to frame the conversation, I will ask you to introduce yourself (name, age, what you do for a living, etc.), and then we’ll jump into the conversation as follows:

1.     Why are you here today, sharing your lived experience of mental health, and what got you to this point?

A chance for you to share your mental health story, and what has triggered/triggers your mental health challenges. As much as you are comfortable doing so, it would be valuable to listeners to understand what your low point was and how it affected you.

2.     How has your last week been?

This is very intentionally focused on normalising your world. We aren’t trying to focus on elite athletes or celebrities here, but Dave at the desk next door. This is about introducing the real world and how you interact with it right out of the gates, be it a positive or more challenging experience.

3.     How has your relationship with your mental health evolved?

A reflection of how things have developed for you, how certain things helped at one time, and how this changed as you have travelled further along the journey.

4.     What have been the lightbulb moments that stand out most along your journey so far?

This is a chance to explore specific moments that helped you make a breakthrough. It’s not about formulating advice for strangers, it’s about you explaining what did or didn’t work for you and what happened as a result.

5.     If someone came to you today with a similar challenge, what’s the most important thing they can do?

The take-out you want to give someone in the same sort of position. It could be a behaviour, contacting an organisation, seeing a professional, recommended reading – the floor is yours.

After this fifth and final question, we will wrap up, end the recording, and have a quick check-in chat before ending the call.

Going live with your episode

I'll do my very best to share a link to the recording at least a few days before it's released, so you can see what it looks like. It won't be edited, as I said above, but it will have GoodEnoughChats branding applied at the start and finish.

The go-live date will be confirmed well in advance and you'll be able to see all the links on the website as soon as it goes live. I can also share some of the teaser clips so that you can post about it yourself on social media.

I encourage guests to post about it themselves, as opposed to just resharing the GoodEnoughChats posts, because it helps us to reach more of their social media connections when people see it come directly from you.
